Genesis of the Work (1938–1944)
Initially conceived in 1938 as a six-month project to revise traditional Tarot iconography, the work expanded into five years (1938–1943) of intensive research between Aleister Crowley (1875–1947) and the painter Lady Frieda Harris (1877–1962).
Trained in the synthetic projective geometry of Rudolf Steiner and Olive Whicher, Lady Harris ensured that every plate synthesized Hermetic Qabalah, Astrology, Alchemy and the four color scales of Liber 777.
In March 1944, The Book of Thoth (Equinox Vol. III, No. 5) was printed in London in a limited edition of 200 numbered copies. Lady Frieda Harris bequeathed the original watercolor paintings to the Warburg Institute at the University of London, where they remain preserved.
The Brazilian Portuguese edition of this archive is reviewed according to the reference work on the Thoth Tarot in Brazil: Tarot: O Templo Vivente (Volumes I & II) by Anderson Rosa (Frater Goya), preserving the exact Qabalistic paths, decans, Shem Ha-Mephorash angels and Court dignities.
