In the Hermetic astrology of the Thoth Tarot, the 360-degree ecliptic circle is divided into twelve signs of 30 degrees and thirty-six decans of 10 degrees each. While the four Aces reside at the supra-sephirotic pole of Kether, the thirty-six numbered plates from 2 to 10 are arrayed around the Zodiac.
The planetary rulers follow the ancient Chaldean Order of the seven sacred planets (Saturn, Jupiter, Mars, Sun, Venus, Mercury and Moon), beginning at 0° Aries with Mars in the 2 of Wands (Dominion) and concluding at 30° Pisces with Mars in the 10 of Cups (Satiety).
Each 10-degree decan is subdivided into two 5-degree quinances governed by a pair of angelic intelligences of the Shem Ha-Mephorash (the 72-fold Divided Name derived from Exodus 14:19–21).
The first angel governs the diurnal half (0° to 5° of the decan) and its outgoing projection; the second angel governs the nocturnal half (5° to 10°) and its inward integration upon the Tree of Life.
Unlike standard zodiacal signs, the twelve celestial Court figures (Knights, Queens and Princes) do not begin at 0° of a sign, but span from 20° of the preceding sign to 20° of the following sign.
Each Court figure thus bridges the third decan of one sign with the first two decans of the next. Meanwhile, the four Princesses stand as the earthly Thrones of the Aces, governing the four polar quadrants.
